"Make Better Art" is the phrased coined by famed Los Angeles artist Betye Saar. This film documents her incredible journey as a creator, teacher, activist, mother and Black woman in America. It also focuses on a period of time (2014–2021) where Saar received unprecedented recognition in the contemporary art world after creating art for nearly six decades. The movie captures footage of Saar receiving honors around the country starting in with the Edward MacDowell Medal of the Arts Award Ceremony at the MacDowell colony in New Hampshire up until the 2019 LACMA Art and Film Gala. The film has also documented her simultaneous solo museum exhibition openings at the Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The Betye Saar Documentary also includes exclusive interviews with contemporary artists, gallerists, curators, family members, friends, and people in her inner circle. In addition to documenting this historical moment in time for Betye Saar, a pioneering black female artist, the film reflects on Saar’s extensive body of work.
